Troubleshooting Johnson Outboard Engine

Wear and tear occurs with any piece of seaworthy equipment, even equipment made by Johnson. Troubleshooting a Johnson outboard engine is fairly simple. Start by checking the fuel tank for low fuel, broken or damaged lines, and test the rubber fuel primer bulb for hardness.

If that all checks out, then take a look at the motor’s spark plugs for corrosion or buildup. Replace any dirty or damaged parts. Run a compression pressure check; any reading below 60 PSI means that you should hire a mechanic because you have larger problems. Of course, replacing the oil with Evinrude Johnson 2 stroke outboard oil is an excellent means of keeping your engine in working order.

Checking an Evinrude Outboard Motor

Checking your Evinrude outboard motor’s oil level should be part of your maintenance routine. It takes only a moment and can help prevent expensive problems down the line. Start by pressing down on the handle at the rear of the engine cover. This will loosen the cover so you can remove it and set it aside.

Look on the starboard side of the engine block for a large ring, aka the dipstick. Pull the ring to remove the dipstick, and then wipe the dipstick clean with a rag. Insert the dipstick back into the tube, withdraw it, and examine the level of the oil. If the oil is below acceptable limits, add Evinrude 2 cycle oil XD100.

Spotlight On: Forrest L. Wood

The design of the modern bass boat is largely attributed to one man, Forrest L. Wood. While maintaining a construction business and cattle farm, Wood began his fishing career as a guide on lakes and rivers in his home state of Arkansas. In 1968 Wood began building his own lake boats.

By 1970 Ranger Boats sold 1,200 units. In 1971, Wood qualified for the first Bassmaster Classic. A year later he inked a deal with the tournament making Ranger Boats the official boat of the Classic until 2000. Today, the Wal-Mart FLW Tour is named after him. Be sure to use Evinrude XD5 oil when you head out in your Ranger boat!

Fishing enthusiasts are probably already familiar with the name Davy Hite. He is a well-established professional bass angler having four major titles to his name and being named a two-time BASS Angler of the Year. When Hite isn’t competing in tournaments, he spends his time with his wife and two sons in South Carolina on a small private lake stocked with bass.

Recently, Hite came in second at the Murray Bassmaster Elite Series. Although he fell one place short of his goal, Hite noted that his Evinrude E-Tec engine helped give him a competitive edge. “The durability and dependability and fuel mileage were really key this week,” he told one news outlet. To achieve your own bass fishing dreams, be sure to use an Evinrude E-Tec engine and Evinrude XD 1 oil.

Keeping the Water Safe

Memorial Day weekend has come and gone. Now we are fully into the summer season. Not surprisingly, boating accidents jump during the summer months. Officers were out in full force on the water this past weekend to keep boaters safe.

For instance, in Pinellas County, Florida, 45 boating accidents were reported last year. That’s down from 51 in 2008, but it still ranks pretty high statewide. To combat this statistic, officers inspected boats and passed out life jackets for people to borrow. Kids who wore their life vests were rewarded for following the rules. Part of water safety is making sure your boat is in good condition, so make sure to use Evinrude XD100 oil before heading out on the water.

Spotlight On: Mercury Marine

Mercury Marine is one of the most well-known brands associated with motorboats. The company was founded in 1939 when Carl Kiekhaefer, an engineer, purchased an outboard motor company in Wisconsin. Kiekhaefer and his workers rebuilt motors and sold them through Montgomery Ward, a mail order company. Since his motors withstood the elements better than other motors on the market, Kiekhaefer named his company after the Roman god, Mercury.

One year after the company’s founding, Kiekhaefer took 16,000 orders at the 1940 New York Boat Show. The company acquired government contracts during WW-II and continued to see the business boom during the post-war era. In 1961 Mercury merged with the Brunswick Corporation. Today, the product brands include Mercury, Mercury Racing, MerCruiser, and Mariner outboards. Evinrude XD100 oil is perfect for keeping your top notch outboard motor running.

Beginners Guide to Outboard Motors Part 2

One oft-forgotten topic in many people’s minds is where to get a good motor. Luckily there are several options available, and they can fit almost any budget. You don’t have to head down to the shop and buy a shiny, brand-spanking-new motor to enjoy boating. In fact, some of the best deals you’ll find aren’t going to be in retail outlets or from dealers of any kind. Used outboard motors offer tremendous value by giving you premium quality at a fraction of the price.

But where do you find used motors? That’s easy, you can check online or in your local newspaper classified to see who’s selling a great motor on the heap. Craigslist is another great resource for finding, selling or buying just about anything you can think of. You can also ask around, or even check with some mechanics or dealers who may know where you can save a bundle on a good motor. Visiting a local swap meet may also be a helpful way to get the deal of a lifetime on your outboard motor. Granted, this won’t be as quick and convenient as buying a brand new motor but you have the opportunity to get a great motor at a fraction of the cost of a new one.

If you choose a Yamaha then get the most from your motor with Yamalube 2M oil.

What Does Motor Oil Do? Part Two

Not only does Evinrude outboard oil provide lubrication to the engine, it also reduces friction between the parts. It’s important to find a medium with the viscosity of the oil you use; if it’s too thick, the engine will have to work harder and you’ll lose power and efficiency. The lubrication and friction reduction produced by the oil helps to prevent rust and corrosion throughout the engine. In addition, premium oil will eliminate carbon deposits and prevent sludge buildup.

When sludge forms in the engine, it prohibits the flow of oil, compounding the damage. Part of the sludge is formed when oil reaches the hottest parts of the engine and burns—at least until recently that is. New additives have made oil burn cleaner, helping to reduce buildup in the system.
