Evinrude Outboard Motors is a major brand of outboard boat motors. Founded by Ole Evinrude, it was formerly owned by the Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC), and is now owned by Bombardier Recreational Products.

Evinrude outboards use primarily two stroke engines in their larger models (40 horsepower and above), and four stroke engines in most of their smaller models.

Evinrude outboards used carburetors until the late 1990s, when FICHT, a fuel injection technology, was introducted.

After Bombardier acquired the Evinrude and Johnson Outboards brands, FICHT technology was replaced by E-TEC direct fuel injection. This improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions, oil usage, noise levels, and maintenance needs. Evinrude E-TEC was the first outboard engine technology to win the American Environmental Protection Agency 2005 Clean Air Excellence Award which recognizes low emission levels. It is also recognized as acceptable for use by the European Union.

Evinrude the dragonfly, a character from Disney’s The Rescuers, was likely inspired by this company–the dragonfly mans a leaf as a sort of airboat in several scenes.

Two-stroke oil (also referred to as two-cycle oil, 2-cycle oil, 2T oil or 2-stroke oil) is an engine oil intended for use in two-stroke engines, like those in many lawnmowers, Outboard motors, mopeds, scooters and small capacity motorcycles, etc. Since these lightweight engines do not feature oil sumps to collect and recycle oil like 4 cycle engines, oil must be mixed with the petrol fuel, for distribution throughout the engine for the purpose of lubrication. The two-stroke oil is ultimately burned along with the fuel resulting in exhaust emissions such as blue smoke and a distinctive odor.

The oil base stock is either petroleum, semi-synthetic or synthetic oil and is mixed with petrol/gasoline with the fuel at a oil ratio ranging from 16:1 to as high as 100:1.

Engine Original equipment manufacturers, (OEM’s) introduced pre-injection systems (sometimes known as “auto-lube”) to engines to operate from a 32 : 1 to 100 : 1 ratio. Oils must meet or exceed the following typical specifications : TC-W3TM, NMMA, [API] TC, JASO FC, ISO-L-EGO.
