Oiled Up

imagesJust like a car, it’s important to make sure that you keep your boat stocked up with the motor oil that it requires. In order to make sure that your engine lasts a long time and doesn’t end up failing on you and requiring some costly replacements, you should be sure to check your oil and add the oil you need whenever possible.

With a bottle of Mercury 2 stroke oil, I can make sure that my boat’s running in perfect condition. I always try to keep stocked up, especially if I’m planning on taking my boat out on any long trips. This way, I’ll be prepared as soon as I get home to check the oil and see if my boat needs more of it.

Rewarding Yourself

I don’t like going to the dentist; I’m pretty sure that nobody really does, but I’ve always especially disliked going to my dentist and I feel like whenever I do it, it’s in a completely begrudging manner. Over the years, however, I’ve learned to find ways to trick myself into not hating my visits to the dentist as much.

For instance, I like to implement a rewards program with myself when I have to do things that I really hate. I get through going to the dentist and then I indulge by purchasing something for myself that makes me happy. After my most recent visit to the dentist, I swung by a boating store and got some Mercury oil and some other nifty accessories for my boat.

I’m a Bad Cook

I’m terrible at making food; I just never was able to get the hang of it. Even when I was in junior high school, taking a Home Ec class, when we got to the cooking portion of the class, I had to rely on everyone else to do everything for me. Now that I’m not living with my parents anymore, I pretty much exclusively eat food from restaurants and things that I can microwave or make sandwiches of.

I seriously can’t understate how bad of a cook I am though; I’m such a bad cook that I might confuse vegetable oil for Mercury oil, and I can’t imagine that would lead to good-tasting food or a working boat. I can barely toast things properly. I’m not sure specifically what led to my failures as a cook, though my parents making all of my meals for me while I lived with them didn’t especially help.

The Spade-Toothed Whale

Recently, specimens of the spade-toothed whale were identified from carcasses that had washed up in New Zealand. These spade-toothed whales are the rarest large mammals on the planet whose existence have been confirmed. In the past two hundred years, there have hardly even been five sightings of this whale, even though it is definitively a separate species from other types of beaked whales.

As someone who’s always wanted to find rare species of animal, this discovery has intrigued me to no end. To think that there’s such a large animal that’s remained essentially hidden for all these years means that who knows what else is out there. I think that what I’m going to do is pick up some Mercury oil for my boat and go out on the ocean to see if I can’t find something rare and interesting myself.

Boating in Kansas

When you think Kansas, you’re probably not thinking of beaches or boating at all. But you’d be surprised that there actually are a few places for Kansans and people visiting Kansas can go to swim, hang out on the beach, and even roam around in a boat. The bigger ones are in the Kansas City area, bordering Missouri, such as Blue Springs Lake and Longview Lake.

But there are also places actually within the borders of Kansas like Shawnee Mission Park Beach and Kill Creek Park Beach. Regardless of where you choose, it’s nice to know that there are places even in the center of the United States where people can still find ways to boat. Just don’t forget to load up on Evinrude oil before you hit the lakes.

Fuel Additives for Deposits

Sometimes it’s good to ensure that you use additional formulas on top of the oil and gasoline you use in your boat. There’s a lot going on in a boat’s engine and because of this, boats require the utmost maintenance. One choice that a lot of boat owners make is to use a fuel additive.

A particularly popular fuel additive is the Yamalube Ringfree Plus fuel additive. It’s used to remove deposits from carburetors, combustion chamber, fuel injectors, and intake ports. These deposits, which can build up from using low quality gasoline or for other reasons, can cause serious damage to the engine, spark plugs, pistons, and other parts of the boat, so it’s important to make sure the deposits are eliminated.

The Most Beautiful Water

Having lived in New York City my whole life, I had no idea what I was missing by never venturing to Adirondack Park, where Lake George is located. It’s not too far away from the bustle of the city that I’ve grown so accustomed to, but it’s enough of a distance that there were no urban distractions to be found while I was lounging on the boat that we rented out on the lake. Once I heard that Thomas Jefferson once referred to Lake George as “the most beautiful water he had ever seen,” I knew there was no way I could pass up something that was so close to the place I call home.

In my humble opinion, Thomas Jefferson was completely right. I couldn’t have had a better time than I did out on Lake George; I’ve decreed it to be impossible. Hanging out in the marina and taking the boat we rented out on the lake was more exciting than I could have ever imagined. So everything would run perfectly, I made sure to pick up some Mercury 2 Stroke Premium Outboard Motor Oil for the boat we rented.

How Long Does Bulk Oil Last?

Every now and then I like to browse boat forums to see what people are talking about outside of the marina. One question that comes up frequently is how long does bulk oil last? One poster stated that he had recently bought a Mercury oil 55 gallon drum and was now worried that he might lose money on the transaction.

One person replied that oil only has a shelf life of four years. The overwhelming majority, however, replied that that was nonsense; motor boat oil does not have an expiration date. From my experience, bulk oil can last years and years, but you may have to mix it every so often to keep it from jelling.

Sandbagger Sloop

This past week I’ve been writing extensively about some of the vessels found at the Mystic Seaport Museum. Until now, I had failed to mention the first Mystic Seaport acquisition: Annie. No, not the musical, Annie is the name of a sandbagger sloop donated to Mystic Seaport in 1931. Annie became the first vessel in the now extensive watercraft collection.

Annie was built in 1880 in Mystic by David O. Richmond. The ship was commissioned by Henry H. Tift to use for competitive racing. In 2004 the ship underwent restoration to return it to its former glory. Annie is definitely a sight to be seen. Perhaps this summer I’ll take my own family to Mystic. It might be nice for my kids to see what boats looked like before the advent of marine engine oil.

Indulgent Boating Experience

“The most rewarding boating experience on the water.” That’s how Yamaha is describing the 242 Limited S. The luxury craft is nearly 24 feet in length and features a forward swept folding tower. The boat is powered by twin 1.8 liter Yamaha Marine engines.

What I like most about the 242 Limited S is the two-tier lounge seating area. It has upholstered seats, cup holders, speakers, and a fresh water shower. The lounge area also doubles as a swim platform. I would buy top of the line Yamaha outboard oil to keep this luxury water vehicle running smoothly.

Repairing WaveRunner Scratches

Scratches on a new vehicle, whether it’s a car or a boat, really irritate me. I recently found some scratches on my brand new WaveRunner which absolutely drove me nuts. Fortunately, I have plenty of experience fixing scratches to look brand new.

Using epoxy fillers, toothpicks, sandpaper, sealant, touch up paint, and polyurethane clear coat, I can fix just about any scratch. It is very time consuming to apply and let the different fillers dry, and then sand them down and paint, but the results are completely worth it. I do need to go to the store to pick up some matching paint, so I suppose while I’m there I’ll also purchase some WaveRunner oil.

Soft Bottom Roll-Up Inflatable Boat

I’ve recently been researching inflatable boats to use as ship-to-shore tenders. A top priority for me is ease of transport rather than speed. For that reason, a soft bottom roll-up inflatable boat was recommended to me.

It is supposedly compact and lightweight. No special equipment or trailers are needed; in fact, the whole boat rolls up into a bag that holds everything needed. The particular boat I’m looking at, by Mercury Marine, seats three people, has slat floorboards for stability, and an ABS-coated transom. A two stroke engine that takes Marine engine oil can be attached to the rear of the boat to easily take me out to where my larger boat is docked.
