Common Motorcycle Problems

Common Motorcycle Problems

There are numerous common issues that arise when servicing dirtbikes and motorcycles, and one such issue occurs when the spark plug becomes saturated with oil and then fouls. This often occurs because of use of incorrect 2-stroke oil used in the engine. In most standard 2-stroke engines, Yamalube 2R or Yamalube 2S oil work the best. To correct the problem, drain the old oil from your injection tank before you add the new Yamalube oil. If the problem doesn’t correct, it could be due to other factors including:

~Spark plug too cold
~Oil injection pump adjusted incorrectly
~Air filter is soiled
~Carburetor adjusted incorrectly

For information on fixing these common problems, check online or with your mechanic. Most problems can be fixed without professional intervention.

Best Oil for Snowmobiles

Best Oil for Snowmobiles

If you’re lucky enough to own a snowmobile, chances are you’d like to know a little about the ideal oil to maintain performance and reduce emissions. The standard 2 stroke oil used in other engines won’t work as well for a snowmobile. It’s important to use 2 stroke oil that is suited for snowmobiles. For example, Yamalube 2R oil is intended for high performance racing. This oil contains the additives necessary to lubricate the engine under high stress conditions, and in addition, it produces less exhaust making cleaning the exhaust valves a breeze.

There are several different opinions on which oil works best in snowmobiles (like all kinds of engines), and often it’s a good idea to ask around about what different people have found works best. It’s a good idea to ask fellow snowmobilers what to use in your snowmobile as results often depend on the model.

Daily Outboard Maintenance

Daily Outboard Maintenance

Outboard motor owners should be aware of a few simple daily checks that will preserve the condition of your engine. First, it’s important to check the outboard motor oil levels in your engine before you intend to use it. Outboard motors can burn through oil much quicker than automobiles, so frequent checks are necessary. You should also ensure that you have adequate fuel for your trip, and more importantly, that your fuel tank vent is open. Check your propeller and ensure that nothing is tangled with it, even fishing line needs to be removed as this can cause serious problems later.

Lastly, make a smell check for potential fuel leaks and oil, and also if you tow your boat on a trailer, and run it in salt water, flush the cooling system with fresh water. Performing these simple checks will increase the longevity of your outboard motor and increase its overall performance too.

Interesting Two Cycle Oil Facts

Interesting Two Cycle Oil Facts

2 cycle outboard oil, also known as 2 stroke oil, is an engine oil intended for use in 2 stroke engines. The main difference between a 2 stroke engine versus a 4 stroke engine is that the 2 stroke doesn’t feature oil sumps to collect and recycle oil, thus the oil must be mixed with the fuel for distribution throughout the engine. There are various ratios which 2 cycle oil must be mixed at, often between 1:16 and 1:50. Because 2 cycle oil is burned with the fuel, it results in a blue smoke exhaust and a unique odor.

In general, 2 cycle oil also has a much lower ash content compared to other motor oils. This lower ash content is necessary to minimize deposits of sludge and grit that form if there is ash present in the oil which is burned in the engine’s combustion chamber.

Disadvantages of Two Stroke Engines

Disadvantages of Two Stroke Engines

I’ve often been asked what would happen if the same 2 stroke engine we use in our favorite outboard motor was transferred to a car or truck, and the answer is the result wouldn’t be all that pleasant. 2 stroke engines don’t last nearly as long 4 stroke engines, and the parts of the engine wear down a lot faster; they’re not meant to travel long distances or be used several times per day. 2 stroke oil is also quite expensive compared to traditional motor oil; a two stroke engine in a car or truck would burn about a gallon of oil every 1,000 miles, and burn fuel less efficiently as well. 2 stroke engines also pollute more than their 4 stroke counterparts.

Despite all of these disadvantages in cars and trucks, two stroke engines still work great for outboard engines and in smaller vehicles like jetskis and snowmobiles.

Fun Outdoor Snow Activities

snowmobile

With the winter season comes frigid weather and snow, as well as all the fun snow activities. Here are a few ideas for enjoying the colder weather:

~Skiing/Snowboarding – you can either rent ski and snowboard equipment or purchase it from a sporting goods store. These activities are most fun on the mountain slopes, but an area with a bit of a downhill slope will work well too.

~Snowmobiling – most people would rather rent a snowmobile than purchase one, but you will want to ensure to check all the engine fluids just like a car. Snowmobiles use different kinds of gasoline and oil, for example, older models will use Yamaha 2S oil, but this won’t work in newer models that have 4 stroke engines.

~Inner tubing – those same old rubber inner tubes you use in the water are great for sliding down a downhill slope; excellent for kids!

What Happens to Used Motor Oil?

industrial-plants

Most outboard motor users know the benefits of recycling their used 2 stroke oil, but not everyone knows where that recycled oil goes afterwards. The primary use for used oil is to re-refine it into a base stock for lubricating oil. The process is similar to refining crude oil, and the result is a re-refined oil the same quality of a refined oil. Used oil is also utilized for energy. Some industrial plants will have boilers which can burn used oil with minimum pollution. In addition, some used oil is burned in heaters designed to provide space heating for small offices.

It’s important to recycle oil to help keep harmful toxins out of the environment, and to do your part to fund renewable energy sources.

Oil for Motorcycles and Scooters

yamaha-motorcycle-oil-change

When changing the oil in your motorcycle or scooter, it is good to have an idea of how far your vehicle can travel before needing more, and what kinds of oil are best to use. Yamaha “Yamalube” oil tends to be the brand of choice for most motorcycles and scooters. For maximum performance and efficiency, use a Yamalube 2S oil. Most motorcyclists and scooter owners will estimate travel between 400-600 miles from one quart of oil.

However it is good to continue to check your oil level regularly before the light flips on your vehicle.

Get Ready For Winter Sports

SES_Snow_Mobile

In less than two months it will officially be winter. Though many people may not look forward to the endless snow and nippy days; others say ‘the more snow the better.’ Winter sports are becoming increasingly popular. Sports like skiing and snowmobiling offer needed outdoor escapes for those trapped in cubicles for the 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. work week.

But before you hope on your snowmobile heading out on that snowy mountain trail it’s important to know some snowmobile safety rules. First, avoid trails with inadequate snow cover. Don’t ever ride on frozen waterways. Be aware of hidden hazards and obstacles beneath the snow. Always abide by signs and barriers. And, make sure your snowmobile is properly tuned up. This involves filling the oil with yamaha 2s oil when needed.

What is a 2 stroke engine?

2 stroke oil

A 2 stroke engine is similar to the common 4 stroke engine, except that it completes the same four processes in two strokes of the piston rather than four. This creates a power stroke for every revolution of the crank, instead of every second revolution. Two stroke engines provide high power for this reason, and are often used in portable, lightweight situations, such as motors and chainsaws.

When dealing with a 2 stroke engine, it’s important to use 2 stroke oil to ensure the engine will operate properly.
